Visit the Walton-MN Home Page

Most web sites have humble beginnings and eventually grow into an effective medium or die from neglect.  Some of the sites I have been involved with have met either fate.  The most visited site, by far, has been the site built for the Viking Council Boy Scouts.  In its first 6 years, the unique visits have been multiplying each year to a mid-2003 level of over 125,000.  The evolution of the site has also demonstrated the need for organization and reusable formatting.  Without a plan and discipline, the task becomes overwhelming and navigation gets "out of control".  By the way, this is a hobby and not my vocation...

Here are some of my efforts to achieve functional sites:

Current Sites:

www.ScoutingBSA.org (.com)
Current demonstration site originally developed for the Viking Council Boy Scouts in the Minneapolis and Central Minnesota area.  Distinguishing features include: the use of databases for unit locations; self administered email registration; database driven lists; (9) child level sub-webs; (6) private and password protected sub webs for departmental use.  Fully based on Front Page and compliant with MSIE 5 and up, Netscape 6 and up, Opera 5 and up.  Current site resides on W2000 with IIS5 and FP2002 extensions.   Style driven by CSS and server include pages.

www.walton-mn.com
This site.  A collection of family items as well as utilities for when I need to work on something at home or on the road.  This site uses a dynamic DNS registration since it is based on a cable service (not static IP) .  A simple FP2002 site with some interesting include pages and I frames that are redirects for managing things.  This is much more convenient way to do testing and things from the local server console.

www.68whs.com
A place for classmates from my High School to visit and keep in touch.  A Front Page site with mostly static content, some DHTML and iframes.  Fun to build but I need more programming help to do it efficiently..

"Fun" Sites:

taz.walton-mn.com
You have to admit that if you have ever had a pet that was more of a family member than a pet, you have probably done some strange things to include your "furry family member" in the fun.  I'm not admitting to any of the above!  I blame my wife for her passionate regard for her "buddies" as the reason for this web site.

kirby.walton-mn.com
Equal time!  These dogs get jealous.  Honest!  On a recent trip to England, she left her lonely friends behind and I know she was lonely, too.  This site was to help her get over the guilt of leaving them behind, and also to help her translate the current time for her return trip home.

Previous Sites:

www.Quannon.com
A commercial software reseller site.  Distinguishing features include interactive forms for registration and inquiry.  Primarily used for a web identity and training class registrations.  FP2002 based on IIS4 with limited use of CSS and heavy use of server side includes.

www.VikingBSA.org (.com)   Viking Council Site
Distinguishing features include: the use of databases for unit locations; self administered email registration; database driven lists; (9) child level sub-webs.  Fully based on Front Page and compliant with MSIE 5 and up, Netscape 6 and up, Opera 5 and up.  Current site resides on W2000 with IIS5 and FP2002 extensions.   Style driven by CSS and server include pages.

Note:  New Scout Council - Northern Star Council 6/30/2005

www.mapleplain.com

City of Maple Plain, MN

www.mapleplain.com/firedept  (inactive)

Maple Plain Fire Department

store.quannon.com (secure)  (inactive)
Small commerce site that features software and hardware products.  Capable of credit card transactions and based on the uShop PERL script commerce engine running inside of a FP2002 site on IIS5.  Virtual directories take commerce transactions off of the web site for secure retrieval.  No customer data stored on the store server.
